My daughter met an older guy online when she was 13 and was convinced by him that she could not live without him, she fell in love and left home to be with him. You might think that our society, social organizations, police or government has ways to deal with this, to provide help for parents, and offer ways to bring our children home, but there is none.

I was lucky, my daughter returned home after being gone for almost 3 years. The sad truth is if our children leave home, no matter what the circumstances, nothing can be done to compel them to come home, unless they want to. In my case there is nothing I could do to bring my daughter home, I tried everything. My daughter had been completely brainwashed by “her boyfriend” of 18. Until she made the decision to come home there is nothing that as her father I could do, there was no help.

I recently read an article in the newspaper that a 12 year old girl had murdered her parents and brother because they had tried to interfere with her affair with a 23 year old man she had met in a chat room. Another article where a 13 year old girl had committed suicide because of a web hoax, and another where a 13 year old girl who had met a guy on line was kidnapped, chained to a basement floor, beaten, sodomized, starved for over a year before she escaped, to be forever traumatized.

Parents, these things are happening now and the common link to them is one thing, a computer. I decided to do something about computers and their addictive, compelling nature, making parents aware that if they suspect something may be happening to their kids, then it probably is, and there are now alternatives that I did not have when dealing with my situation.

I am not going to tell you that life is easy, that enforcing your family rules and values is easy, especially in today’s “I want it now” society that embraces everything that is advanced technology.
